HEDD CTRL: Software Calibration Arrives for MK2 Monitors

Two professional audio manufacturers have entered the software-integrated monitor market this year: Kali with their SM series and EVE Audio with their EXO series.

It's now safe to say that the future of monitoring lies in software.

And now, another monitoring manufacturer has announced they're joining the fray...

HEDD CTRL Software

Like mainstream speaker control software, it allows network-connected speakers to be powered on/off, soloed, muted, and grouped.

It also enables individual adjustment of each speaker's volume, EQ, delay, and phase calibration (LINEARISER). These are deep controls that general-purpose calibration software simply can't provide.

The software is free, but it only supports the MK2 series monitors. (Interestingly, the volume faders are angled... quite distinctive.)

HEDD CTRL's acoustic adjustment functionality is designed as a 12-band equaliser, but currently - like Kali and EVE's software - it's "temporarily" limited to manual calibration only.

There's no automatic calibration available yet.

This means you'll need to pair it with third-party measurement software like REW or Smaart, provide your own calibration microphone, take measurements yourself, and then manually adjust the 12-band equaliser within HEDD CTRL.

Whilst it does technically support speaker calibration, this is admittedly still quite a demanding task for most musicians and recording engineers.

However, whether it's Kali, EVE, or HEDD, once they've incorporated multi-band EQ functionality into their respective control and calibration software, I'd wager their next step will inevitably be to introduce a corresponding calibration microphone and complete the automatic calibration feature.

But how long will that take? We'll just have to wait and see.
